What is Remote Work?

Working from a location outside of a traditional office, typically from home. Remote work has become a standard arrangement across many industries since 2020.

Remote Work Explained

Remote work refers to professional work performed outside a centralized office, most commonly from home. Since the pandemic accelerated remote work adoption, it has become a permanent fixture in many industries, especially technology, marketing, finance, and creative fields.

For resume purposes, remote work experience is valuable to highlight when applying for remote positions. It signals that you are self-motivated, experienced with remote collaboration tools, and can work independently without direct supervision.

When listing remote work on your resume, include "Remote" as the location next to your job title and company. If the role was hybrid, you can note "Hybrid (Remote/On-site)."

Example

On a resume: "Senior Software Engineer, Acme Corp — Remote | Jan 2022 – Present • Led a distributed team of 6 engineers across 4 time zones • Implemented asynchronous communication practices that improved sprint velocity by 20%"

How This Relates to Your Resume

When applying for remote roles, highlight remote-specific skills: asynchronous communication, self-management, experience with remote tools (Slack, Zoom, Notion), and working across time zones.
