What is Professional Summary?

A 2-4 sentence paragraph at the top of your resume that highlights your experience level, key skills, and most impressive achievements.

Professional Summary Explained

A professional summary (also called a career summary or resume summary) is a brief statement at the top of your resume that gives hiring managers a quick overview of your qualifications. It replaces the outdated objective statement and is now considered standard for experienced professionals.

The best professional summaries include your years of experience, job title or field, top 2-3 skills relevant to the target role, and a quantified achievement. For example: "Results-driven marketing manager with 8+ years of experience in digital marketing and brand strategy. Led campaigns generating $2.5M in revenue and grew organic traffic by 180%."

Example

"Certified public accountant with 6 years of experience in corporate tax planning and compliance. Managed tax filings for clients with combined revenue exceeding $500M and identified $3.2M in tax savings through strategic planning."

How This Relates to Your Resume

Write a new professional summary for each job application, tailoring it to match the specific role and company. Lead with your strongest qualification that matches the job description.
