Phone Screening Explained

A phone screening (or phone screen) is typically the first step in the interview process. A recruiter or HR representative calls to verify basic qualifications, discuss salary expectations, assess your interest in the role, and determine if you should advance to the next round.

Common questions include: "Tell me about yourself," "Why are you interested in this role?", "What are your salary expectations?", and "What is your availability?" The goal is not to stump you but to confirm a basic fit.

Prepare by researching the company, having your resume in front of you, knowing your salary range, and being ready to articulate why you are interested in this specific role.

Example

A recruiter might ask: "Your resume mentions experience with Kubernetes. Can you briefly describe your level of expertise?" Have a concise answer ready: "I have 3 years of production Kubernetes experience, managing clusters of 200+ pods for microservices serving 5M daily requests."
